Evergreen State College Forest Canopy Study Center

The Evergreen State College Forest Canopy Study Center involves the construction of an aerial hike through the forest canopy adjacent to the North side of the campus library. This accessible walkway will take off from the 3rd floor of the library lobby and wind up through, around and back down to the ground within the forest. The walk will be punctuated by a series of events and platforms for scientific experiments, instruction, and public viewing. A seminar room will be a major way-station on the hike. This enclosed space will hover within the canopy and provide a year-round multi-purpose meeting and performance space in the tree tops.

The primary purpose of the canopy project is to create a widely accessible public entry into the generally unreachable frontier of the forest tree tops. The structure will serve multiple functions as a place for educational instruction, scientific research, public awareness, recreation, and creative, inter-disciplinary projects in the arts and sciences.
