Using the same modular panelized system developed for single family homes, this affordable apartment project in metropolitan Tokyo maintains the demographic mix of the neighborhood by creating a variety of dwelling types and retail shop space on a very small site sandwiched between train tracks, a temple cemetery and a dense area of traditional houses and rice farms. The building contains handicap accessible flats and a small shop on the ground level with two-story townhouse apartments above. The materials and layout attempt to provide a flexible loft-like living environment with flow-through ventilation, bright daylight and maximum opportunity for outdoor living on terraces, balconies and trellis-wrapped rooftop decks. The three-story, 2 unit modules of this project have been configured for other applications with ground floor garages and recombined as townhouses and duplexes.
